A violation of team rules forces the Horned Frogs to scramble in the secondary, losing an All-Conference transfer just days before their season opener in Ireland.
TCU spent the offseason preparing to replace one of the most important pieces of its secondary.
Now the Horned Frogs will have to replace one of the players who appeared well on his way to helping them do it.
Safety Jacob Fields has been dismissed from TCU for a violation of team rules, a team spokesman confirmed to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
"Due to a violation of team rules, Jacob Fields has been removed from our roster and will not be a member of our football team moving forward," the spokesman said.
No additional details regarding the violation were provided by TCU in the statement.
That's a significant late-camp development for a defense already tasked with replacing Bud Clark in the secondary.
Clark was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft after concluding his career in Fort Worth.
Fields appeared positioned to become part of TCU's answer.
The Louisiana Tech transfer entered camp competing with Jordan Lester for the starting free safety job and had been taking the bulk of the first-team reps before his dismissal.
And Fields arrived in Fort Worth with quite the résumé.
The Melissa, Texas, native was named Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2025 after starting all 12 games at safety and recording 92 tackles, three interceptions, 2.5 tackles for loss and five pass breakups.
Two of those interceptions were returned for touchdowns.
His 92 tackles also made him the first defensive back to lead Louisiana Tech in tackles since 2014.
That's the caliber of production TCU thought it was adding to its secondary.
Now those plans have changed before Fields ever played a game for the Horned Frogs.
And the timing certainly isn't ideal.
TCU opens its 2026 season against North Carolina in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug. 29, leaving the Horned Frogs less than two weeks to adjust before playing a game that counts.
Fortunately ... Fields wasn't the only experienced safety expected to play a major role.
Jamel Johnson returns after leading TCU with five interceptions last season and gives the Horned Frogs an established presence on the back end.
But Fields' departure removes one of the most accomplished additions from TCU's offseason transfer class and creates another opportunity elsewhere in the safety room.
Lester would be an obvious name to watch.
The redshirt junior appeared in 12 games with two starts last season, recording 16 tackles and two pass breakups, and was already competing with Fields for the free safety job.
TCU knew replacing Clark would require someone else to emerge in 2026.
Fields appeared well on his way to becoming a major part of that transition.
Now, less than two weeks before the Horned Frogs take the field in Dublin, they'll have to find that production somewhere else.
