TCU pitcher Lance Davis picked up Big 12 weekly honors after firing seven scoreless innings against UCF and helping the Horned Frogs secure a key win.

TCU baseball got a major lift from freshman right-hander Lance Davis last week, and the Big 12 took notice.

After a standout outing against UCF, Davis was recognized with conference weekly honors, giving the Horned Frogs another sign that one of their young arms is quickly becoming a real factor in league play.

Lance Davis helped power the Horned Frogs to a 6-0 win over UCF by delivering seven shutout innings, the kind of start that can change the tone of a series and settle a team down.

The freshman from Jonesboro, Arkansas, allowed only two hits, walked two and struck out five while keeping the Knights off balance from the first inning through the seventh.

That line alone stands out, but the way Davis controlled the game may have been even more impressive.

He never faced more than four hitters in any inning, consistently worked out front, and made life difficult on a UCF lineup that never found much rhythm.

Only one runner reached third base against him, and TCU finished the day with its first shutout of the season.

That performance was enough to earn Davis both Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and co-Newcomer of the Week recognition, a strong statement for a freshman still building his resume at the college level.

In a conference that demands reliable pitching every weekend, Davis gave TCU exactly what it needed ... length, command and poise.

Strong starting pitching can steady everything in Big 12 baseball, and Davis showed he might be ready to take on a larger role as the season moves deeper into conference play.

TCU will need more performances like this if it wants to stay in the mix near the top of the league standings. But for one weekend, Davis gave the Horned Frogs more than innings. He gave them momentum, and now he has conference recognition to match it.
