TCU women’s basketball added Stanford transfer Lara Somfai after a strong freshman season, giving the Horned Frogs a major frontcourt piece for 2026-27.

FORT WORTH - TCU women’s basketball made a big move in the transfer portal with the addition of Stanford forward Lara Somfai, a pickup that immediately gives the Horned Frogs another high-upside piece for a roster that’s being reshaped for another postseason run.

Somfai arrives in Fort Worth after a strong freshman season at Stanford, where she started 32 games and quickly established herself as one of the top young frontcourt players in the country.

The 6-3 forward averaged 10.8 points and 9.1 rebounds in 26 minutes per game while earning ACC All-Freshman Team honors.

She also collected four ACC Rookie of the Week awards and was named the USBWA National Freshman of the Week on Nov. 25, giving TCU women’s basketball a proven producer with national recognition.

For TCU, the timing of the commitment matters just as much as the talent.

The Horned Frogs are working through a significant offseason roster transition after losing multiple veterans to graduation and several contributors to the transfer portal.

Somfai helps address that turnover right away, especially in the frontcourt, where TCU had to replace major production and experience.

Her skill set should make her especially valuable. Somfai showed she can rebound at a high level and operate as a modern forward who can stretch the floor.

She attempted 124 shots from 3-point range at Stanford, the second-highest total on the team, though improving on her 29 percent mark from deep could take her offensive game to another level.

Even so, her combination of size, mobility and versatility gives TCU a player who can fit a variety of lineups.

The roster work likely isn’t done. TCU still has scholarships to use before the portal closes on April 20, and more additions seem likely as the program looks to push beyond its recent Elite Eight ceiling.

Still, Somfai’s commitment is a strong start and a clear sign the Horned Frogs intend to stay in the national conversation.
