The Dallas Cowboys will get a closer look at Texas A&M running back EJ Smith, the son of franchise icon Emmitt Smith, before the NFL Draft.
Texas A&M running back EJ Smith worked out at the Aggies' Pro Day in College Station on Wednesday.
And soon, the Dallas Cowboys legacy will be on his way to the Metroplex to showcase his skills to "America's Team" as the NFL Draft approaches.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Smith has announced that he will attend the Cowboys' annual workout held for local prospects, otherwise referred to as "Dallas Day." Smith said he also has a workout scheduled with the Houston Texans.
Emmitt Smith, EJ's father, is one of the most iconic players in Cowboys history. He became the NFL's all-time leading rusher - a title he still holds over two decades later - and is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the franchise.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer was already in attendance to scout EJ in College Station on Wednesday as he treks across the major programs in the state. Schottenheimer was in Austin on Tuesday with the Texas Longhorns and is in Lubbock with the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Thursday.
Smith, a Jesuit product during his high school career, spent time at Stanford before transferring into Mike Elko's program at Texas A&M for his final two seasons of college ball.
He totaled 969 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in his college career. At Jesuit, Smith was a star, rushing for 3,072 yards and 60 career touchdowns.
Smith was not one of the initial Aggies who received a dinner invite with Cowboys brass, but he will surely be one of the top focuses at Dallas Day as he's hopeful to pursue his dream of following in his father's footsteps.
Dallas holds two first-round picks and is widely expected to favor the defensive side of the ball at the top of the draft. However, a late-round investment in a familiar prospect like Smith could be in the cards.
The Cowboys re-signed starting running back Javonte Williams to a three-year contract earlier this offseason. Last year, Dallas drafted two running backs in Day 3 of the draft (Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah) but neither have carved themselves a legitimate role on the roster.
