As Chet Holmgren and other key stars face lengthy absences, the veteran guard’s elite defensive versatility and efficient scoring provide a vital lifeline for Oklahoma City’s depleted rotation.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are getting an important piece of their rotation back at a time when the team could certainly use some additional help. Former Texas A&M Aggies hoops standout and current veteran guard Alex Caruso is expected to return to NBA action Wednesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers after missing the previous three games with an ankle sprain.

Caruso's return comes at an important point in Oklahoma City's season, as the defending contenders are dealing with several significant injuries throughout their roster. While getting one player back will not solve all of the Thunder's problems, Caruso's experience, defensive ability and versatility should provide a welcome boost.

Oklahoma City has already lost several key contributors, including Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Cason Wallace. Holmgren is expected to miss more than two months after suffering a small tear in his patellar tendon, while Williams and Wallace have undergone surgeries for their respective injuries. Both players face uncertain timelines for returning to the court.

With so many important players unavailable, Caruso could find himself taking on a much larger responsibility than originally expected. The veteran guard has been an important defensive presence since arriving in Oklahoma City, and his ability to guard multiple positions makes him particularly valuable when the roster is short-handed.

Caruso has also gotten off to an encouraging start offensively. Through his first four appearances of the 2026-27 campaign, he is averaging 9.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 56.5 percent from the field. Those numbers are particularly impressive considering he has played fewer than 20 minutes per game.

His return should give Oklahoma City another reliable option alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, especially with the team's depth being tested early in the season. Caruso's defensive versatility could also become increasingly important against talented opposing backcourts.

It remains to be seen whether Caruso immediately returns to the starting lineup or continues coming off the bench. However, regardless of his role, the Thunder will need him to contribute consistently while several of their regular rotation players remain sidelined.

For a team suddenly facing considerable adversity, getting a veteran like Caruso back on the floor is an encouraging development. Oklahoma City still has plenty of challenges ahead, but his return gives the Thunder another experienced player capable of helping keep things together.
