Anonymous SEC coaches praised Mike Elko’s Texas A&M culture but questioned whether Marcel Reed can deliver in the Aggies’ biggest games.
Marcel Reed and Texas A&M football are walking into 2026 with playoff expectations, SEC pressure and one loud question that won’t go away: can the Aggies’ quarterback own the biggest games?
Reed’s numbers say he’s dangerous. The redshirt junior threw for a career-best 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season while helping Texas A&M finish 11-2 and reach the College Football Playoff under Mike Elko. But not everyone around the SEC is sold yet.

One anonymous SEC coach told Athlon Sports, “I always thought [QB Marcel Reed] was a great athlete. Respect him, but I always judge those guys on, ‘Do they win those big games? Are they the main difference?’ He’s got a year under his belt, but there’s gonna be more pressure on him facing the top half of the league and not have it just come down to the Texas game at the end.”
That’s the edge of Reed’s 2026 storyline.
He flashed the full package last season, especially in Texas A&M’s blowout road win over LSU. Reed threw for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for over 100 yards and two more scores. That version of him can stress a defense until it breaks.
But the Aggies didn’t always unleash his legs late in the season, partly to protect him from injury. That conservative approach came back into focus in losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP. Reed can win from the pocket, but his running ability is what makes him a problem.
Now he’s working with quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch to sharpen the details — cleaner mechanics, quicker reads and better command when the pocket gets ugly.
Elko, meanwhile, is getting plenty of respect.
Another anonymous coach said, “Mike Elko is a real-deal ball coach. The way they carry themselves, the way they compete, how physical they are on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They play complete team football. You watch them and you see the way they handle adversity at times throughout the season — that doesn’t just happen unless you’ve got a culture.”
That’s the foundation. Elko has changed the attitude in College Station, and the Aggies now look like a team built to punch back.
The schedule won’t be friendly. Road games at LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Alabama and Oklahoma will test everything.
For Texas A&M, the formula is simple and brutal.
Elko has built the machine. Reed has to prove he can drive it when the lights are hottest.
