Texas A&M football took a hit after the Maroon & White Game as linebacker Daymion Sanford suffered a lower-body injury, leaving key depth questions.

Texas A&M football came out of the Maroon & White Game with one clear concern ... the health of linebacker Daymion Sanford.

While spring games rarely offer a full picture of what an SEC defense will look like in the fall, Sanford’s lower-body injury casts an immediate shadow over the progress Mike Elko’s team made during spring practice.

Sanford was expected to take on a major role in the Aggies’ linebacker unit in 2026 after Taurean York and Scooby Williams moved on.

The senior from Katy, Texas, delivered a breakout season a year ago, finishing with 57 tackles, three sacks and an interception while carving out a valuable role in Elko’s defensive system.

His mix of speed, range and pass-rushing ability gave Texas A&M a versatile weapon, especially in pressure situations.

After Saturday’s televised scrimmage, Elko kept his update brief and offered no timeline for Sanford’s return, saying only that the injury involved the lower body and more evaluation is ahead.

That uncertainty leaves Texas A&M leaning even harder on the rest of its linebacker room as the offseason continues.

The good news for the Aggies is that there are still options. Sophomore Noah Mikhail turned heads this spring and capped off the Maroon & White Game with a pick-six off freshman quarterback Helaman Casuga.

Transfer Ray Coney and junior Jordan Lockhart also figure to be important pieces as Texas A&M works to stabilize the middle of its defense.

Mikhail made it clear after the game that Sanford’s value goes well beyond production.

He described Sanford as a unique presence and an emotional leader for the group. That matters for a defense trying to establish chemistry under pressure.

Texas A&M may not know how long Sanford will be out, but his absence creates an early test for a linebacker corps that suddenly has to prove its depth in a hurry.
