Vanessa Borovilos fired a 4-under 66 to put Texas A&M women’s golf in second place after one round of the NCAA Waco Regional.

Texas A&M women’s golf put itself in a strong position Monday at the NCAA Waco Regional, using a standout round from Vanessa Borovilos to finish the opening day tied for second at even par.

The No. 4 Aggies shot 210 at Ridgewood Country Club, sitting three strokes behind leader SMU, which opened at 3 under.

Texas A&M is tied with No. 8 Oregon, while No. 16 Tennessee is fourth at 2 over. The top five teams after 54 holes advance, and the Aggies are currently seven shots clear of the projected cut line.

Borovilos delivered the round of the day for Texas A&M, carding a 4-under 66 to share the individual lead with Oregon’s Kiara Romero and Tennessee’s Kyra Van Kan.

Borovilos started fast with birdies on her first two holes, added two more on Nos. 4 and 6, then steadied herself before making key birdies on Nos. 13 and 14.

Texas A&M head coach Gerrod Chadwell liked the start, especially considering the conditions.

“It is nice to get off to a good start,” Chadwell said. “We made great adjustments today to shoot even par with the wind the way that it was.”

The Aggies also received important counting scores from Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Brynn Kort, who each shot 1-over 71 and are tied for 12th.

Fernández García-Poggio recovered from a tough opening nine with a 74-yard eagle hole-out using a 58-degree wedge, then added a birdie on No. 14.

Natalie Yen posted a 2-over 72, while Sky Sudberry shot 73.

Texas A&M made its biggest move on holes 11 through 15, picking up six strokes as a team with one eagle, five birdies and only one bogey.

The Aggies return Tuesday morning looking to stay inside the championship qualifying line.
