Fans can argue Alabama’s numbers, Georgia’s “G,” LSU’s tiger logo, Texas’ burnt orange simplicity or Ole Miss’ powder blue pop. But A&M’s maroon-and-white look belongs near the very top because it actually feels like the program.

There’s a reason big changes to the Aggies’ standard helmet usually get pushback. Texas A&M football is built on tradition, and the helmet is part of the emotional deal.
It represents the 12th Man, the Corps, the old Southwest Conference battles, the move to the SEC and every Saturday when more than 100,000 fans turn College Station into one of the loudest places in the sport.
That doesn’t mean the Aggies can’t evolve. They should. A black alternate? Sure. A throwback? Absolutely. A recruiting-weekend concept that gets players buzzing? Go for it.
But when Texas A&M runs out for a major SEC game, especially at home, nothing beats the classic maroon helmet.
Kentucky taking the No. 1 spot in some rankings will get people talking, and Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas and Ole Miss all have strong cases near the top. Still, Texas A&M sitting at No. 2 feels right because the Aggies’ helmet is more than a design.
