Former Texas A&M defensive star Myles Garrett could be sidelined for a significant portion of the early NFL season as he recovers from knee surgery.
According to ESPN, Garrett has been given a recovery timeline of approximately six weeks following an arthroscopic procedure on his knee. The Los Angeles Rams placed the All-Pro defensive end on injured reserve after he played through the injury during the team's season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The six-week timeline would potentially keep Garrett out until November. While NFL rules require players placed on injured reserve to miss at least four games, the latest report indicates Garrett's absence could extend beyond the minimum period. A potential return around Week 9, when the Rams face the Washington Commanders on Nov. 8, has been identified as a possible target based on the recovery timeline.
Garrett's knee had already been an issue before the regular season began. He missed much of training camp because of swelling and did not play during the preseason. Despite those concerns, Garrett attempted to play in the season opener against San Francisco.
The results were far from what the Rams expected from their biggest defensive addition. Garrett played 40 defensive snaps but finished without a tackle or sack as Los Angeles suffered a 27-7 defeat. Garrett acknowledged afterward that he was not playing at his normal level and said he needed to find a way to get back to being the player he knew he could be.
That player has been one of the NFL's most dominant pass rushers ever. Garrett set the league's single-season sack record with 23 sacks in 2025, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in the process. The Rams acquired him from the Cleveland Browns during the offseason in a blockbuster trade that included pass rusher Jared Verse and multiple draft selections.
The Rams clearly made a major investment in Garrett with hopes that his presence could elevate their defense. For now, though, the priority will be allowing his knee to heal properly.
Garrett reportedly wants to beat the six-week timeline, but Los Angeles has indicated it will not rush its star pass rusher back onto the field. But if there's any fanbase that knows how determined Garrett is, it's the fans at College Station.
For a player whose career has been defined by relentless production, the next several weeks will be about patience and recovery rather than adding to his impressive sack total.
