Texas A&M bounced back from a rough opener to win its Mississippi State series and secure the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament.

Texas A&M baseball closed the SEC regular season with the kind of response postseason teams have to make.

After a rough Thursday night against No. 13 Mississippi State, when the Aggies gave up 13 runs in one inning during an 18-11 loss, No. 10 Texas A&M answered with back-to-back wins to take the series and secure the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament.

The Aggies finish league play at 18-11 and sit 39-13 overall, putting them in a strong position not only in Hoover but also in the national hosting conversation. Texas A&M is now lined up for its highest SEC Tournament seed since 2022, when it earned the No. 2 seed.

That’s a major statement for second-year coach Michael Earley, who has pushed the program back into serious postseason relevance after missing the NCAA Tournament in his first season.

With 39 wins and a possible top-eight national seed still on the table, Earley has built one of the SEC’s strongest Coach of the Year cases.

The series win was even more impressive because the Aggies had to navigate it without sophomore Aiden Sims, who has looked like their most reliable starter.

Texas A&M’s rotation has been inconsistent through SEC play, forcing the bullpen into high-pressure spots.

On Saturday, Earley had to lean again on Ethan Darden, Gavin Lyons and closer Clayton Freshcorn. It wasn’t always clean, as Freshcorn allowed all six runs, but he still found a way to finish it. In the final inning, he recorded two strikeouts and induced a pop-up to lock down his 13th save.

That kind of survive-and-advance toughness matters in May.

Texas A&M is expected to play Friday night at 6:30 p.m. after earning a double-bye. The Aggies will face the winner from the Auburn, Oklahoma and LSU side of the bracket.

After a shaky start to the weekend, Texas A&M leaves it with momentum, a top-three SEC seed and a postseason path that looks very real.
