Mya Perez is forcing opponents to pitch around her, but the Texas A&M slugger keeps producing elite numbers anyway.
Texas A&M softball slugger Mya Perez has become one of the toughest outs in college softball, and opponents know it.
In a season packed with record-setting offense across the sport, Perez has still managed to separate herself with a rare mix of power, patience and plate discipline.
The Aggies junior is hitting .455 with a massive .951 slugging percentage, a .621 on-base percentage, 56 hits, 50 RBI and 17 home runs.
Those numbers are loud enough on their own. What makes them even more impressive is how rarely pitchers are giving her anything comfortable to hit.
Perez has drawn 46 walks this season, and during Texas A&M’s series against South Carolina, she was hit by a pitch three times and walked twice.
That kind of treatment can frustrate even the best hitters, but Perez has turned it into part of her value. She’s not chasing, she’s not forcing swings and she’s trusting the Aggies lineup around her to finish innings.
That approach is a major reason USA Softball named Perez a Top 25 finalist for National Player of the Year.
In a Division I season loaded with monster stat lines, Perez’s production has carried All-SEC weight and national relevance.
Texas A&M head coach Trisha Ford has been clear about Perez’s ability, calling her the purest hitter she has coached. It’s easy to see why.
Perez isn’t just driving the ball out of the park. She’s controlling the strike zone like a veteran and making opponents pay even when they refuse to challenge her.
As Texas A&M pushes toward the postseason, Perez gives the Aggies a centerpiece every contender needs.
She can change a game with one swing, extend an inning with one take and force opposing coaches into uncomfortable decisions.
Pitch around her, and she’ll take the base. Challenge her, and she might end up circling them.
