Rueben Owens is gaining breakout attention as Texas A&M looks for a stronger run game under Mike Elko and new OC Holmon Wiggins.

Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens is quickly becoming one of the most important names to watch as the Aggies move toward the 2026 college football season.

Mike Elko is entering his third year in College Station, and while Texas A&M may still be building toward national championship contention, the offense has enough talent to take a real step forward.

Quarterback Marcel Reed returns as the starter, and former Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Horton gives the Aggies a 6-4 target who can stretch the field and help in the red zone.

But the key to making the offense more balanced may be Owens.

The former five-star recruit is expected to lead Texas A&M’s backfield after rushing for a career-best 639 yards and five touchdowns last season while averaging 5.4 yards per carry.

He took on a bigger role after Le’Veon Moss was lost for the season, flashing the talent that made him one of the most coveted running backs in the 2023 recruiting class.

Still, consistency remains the challenge. Owens ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns against Missouri, but his production dipped in the following weeks.

He also had some rough moments as a pass catcher late in the year, including the regular-season finale against Texas.

That’s why this offseason matters so much.

Owens has reportedly added healthy weight and is preparing for a larger workload in Holmon Wiggins’ offense, which is expected to lean more heavily on the run game.

Sophomore Jamarion Morrow should also factor into the rotation, giving Texas A&M another explosive option.

ESPN’s Dave Wilson recently named Owens as Texas A&M’s “under the radar” player, citing his star potential when healthy.

For the Aggies, Owens isn’t just a breakout candidate. He may be the difference between a good offense and a dangerous one.
