Texas Longhorns football is built around Arch Manning, but as LonghornsWire wrote, KJ Lacey may be the quarterback who quietly decides how far the 2026 season goes.
That’s the uncomfortable truth as Texas moves closer to kickoff.

Manning is the centerpiece, the headliner and the quarterback most likely to carry Steve Sarkisian’s offense into the College Football Playoff conversation.
But recent Texas history says the backup quarterback won’t just hold a clipboard all season.
At some point, Lacey may have to win a moment.
The Longhorns have lived this script before. In 2023, Maalik Murphy stepped in for an injured Quinn Ewers and won two games that kept Texas’ postseason hopes alive.
In 2024, Arch Manning got two starts while Ewers recovered and kept the machine moving. Last season, Matthew Caldwell didn’t start, but his overtime touchdown against Mississippi State helped preserve Texas’ CFP path.
Now it’s Lacey’s turn to be ready.
Nobody in Austin wants Manning sidelined. If Texas is going to win a national championship, Manning almost certainly has to be the guy under center.
But his running ability, physical style and some lingering offensive line questions make it hard to assume he’ll avoid every hit, scare or awkward Saturday moment.
That’s where Lacey becomes more than a depth-chart footnote.
The former prized recruit has spent nearly two years learning behind Manning, absorbing Sarkisian’s system and growing into the kind of distributor this offense needs.
He’s been described as having that point guard-style feel, which matters in a scheme built on timing, spacing and smart decisions.
Texas doesn’t need Lacey to become a superstar overnight. It may just need him to survive one half, finish one drive or protect one game.
That sounds small until Selection Sunday arrives.
For Texas, the backup quarterback role hasn’t been optional lately. It’s been season-saving. Lacey better be ready, because his number is coming.
