That has changed fast. After landing six blue-chip commitments over the last month, Texas has climbed into serious national recruiting relevance again.
Now Steve Sarkisian’s staff has a chance to turn a strong run into a statement by landing five-star cornerback John Meredith III, one of the biggest prizes in the entire 2027 class.
Meredith is expected to choose between Texas, Alabama and Texas A&M, and the timing couldn’t be more dramatic.
The Longhorns have been chasing momentum, the Aggies have been sitting on the nation’s top recruiting class, and Alabama is still Alabama.
But the buzz around Texas has gotten louder at exactly the right time.
According to recruiting projections referenced by Rivals, multiple analysts have recently picked Texas to win this battle.
Jason Callaway of Aggie Yell and Justin Wells of Inside Texas reportedly joined Adam Gorney of Rivals in projecting Meredith to the Longhorns.
That doesn’t make it official. Recruiting has a cruel way of humbling confident fan bases. But it absolutely matters.
Meredith isn’t just another highly rated defensive back. He’s viewed as the No. 2 overall prospect in the country and the top cornerback in the 2027 cycle.
That’s the kind of player who changes the feel of a class the second he announces.
Texas already has four-star safety Greedy James committed, giving the Longhorns a quality secondary piece.
Add Meredith to that mix, and suddenly, Texas isn’t just collecting defensive backs. It’s building a future SEC problem on the back end.
The bigger storyline is what this would say about the Longhorns’ recruiting muscle. Texas A&M looked like the spring leader. Alabama made the final cut. Yet Texas appears to be surging late.
If Meredith picks the Longhorns, Texas likely pushes toward the top 10 nationally and lands a headliner who gives the 2027 class real star power.
Nothing is done until Meredith says it himself. But Texas has every reason to feel dangerous right now.
