Cambria Salmon is leaving Texas softball for UCLA, giving the Bruins a proven right-handed arm with two years of eligibility still ahead.
Texas softball took a real bullpen hit when Cambria Salmon chose UCLA out of the transfer portal, and this one shouldn’t be brushed off as just another offseason roster move.
Salmon, a California native and former elite recruit, spent two seasons with the Longhorns and now heads back west with two years of eligibility remaining.

For UCLA softball, it’s a strong portal pickup. For Texas, it’s the kind of departure that quietly stings because reliable right-handed pitching isn’t exactly easy to replace.
Salmon’s numbers at Texas tell the story. Across 26 appearances, she posted a 2.33 ERA, held opponents to a .225 batting average and struck out 78 hitters.
She wasn’t always used in the same role, either. That’s part of what made her valuable. She could start, come out of the bullpen, give Texas matchup flexibility and change the look of a game from the left side.
That versatility now belongs to UCLA.
Her 2026 season was limited to just four appearances, but when Salmon did get the ball, she reminded people why she arrived in Austin with major expectations.
This wasn’t some under-the-radar arm coming out of high school. Salmon was ranked as the No. 4 recruit in her class by Extra Inning Softball, and that profile helped make her one of the more interesting names available once she entered the portal.
Her freshman year showed the upside. Salmon finished that season with a 2.48 ERA, the second-best mark on the Texas staff, and looked comfortable handling meaningful innings even as a young pitcher.
During her Longhorns career, she made 10 starts, proving she could be more than a situational bullpen option.
That’s why UCLA moved fast.
The Bruins aren’t just getting depth. They’re adding a pitcher who has already handled pressure inside a national-title-caliber program, faced high-level lineups and shown she can miss bats.
If Salmon stays healthy and finds a consistent role, she could become a major piece of UCLA’s pitching staff.

For Texas, the challenge now is internal. The Longhorns have options, but replacing a righty with Salmon’s pedigree and experience won’t be automatic.
For UCLA, this is exactly the kind of transfer portal move that can matter in May and June. Salmon didn’t spend long at Texas, but her next chapter could be a big one.
