No. 1 Texas faces Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, with Arch Manning counting on six key Longhorns to overcome the Sooners' dangerous defense and secure another win.
DALLAS - Texas might be the nation's No. 1 team, but Steve Sarkisian knows better than to underestimate Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.
The undefeated Longhorns (4-0) enter Saturday's 122nd meeting against the Sooners (2-2) as favorites. However, Oklahoma's defense presents a legitimate threat to Arch Manning and the Texas offense, making individual performances especially important.
Six Longhorns could ultimately determine whether Texas keeps the Golden Hat.
Hollywood Smothers, Running Back
The Red River Rivalry often comes down to physicality, and Smothers could provide the difference. Texas has won the rushing battle in each of Sarkisian's three victories over Oklahoma.
Establishing Smothers early would relieve pressure on Manning against a talented Sooners defensive front.
Nick Townsend, Tight End
Townsend's expected return provides another weapon for Manning. The sophomore missed two games with a bone bruise but was upgraded to available Thursday. His versatility could create mismatches against Oklahoma's aggressive defense.
Connor Robertson, Center
Robertson anchors an interior offensive line featuring Dylan Sikorski and Brandon Baker. That trio faces a difficult assignment against Oklahoma defensive tackles David Stone and Jayden Jackson. Protecting Manning and creating running lanes will be essential.
Lance Jackson, Defensive End
Jackson generated nine pressures against Tennessee, helping Colin Simmons disrupt the Volunteers' offense. Against Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, maintaining outside containment could be just as important as collecting sacks.
Justin Cryer, Linebacker
Oklahoma tight end Rocky Beers has emerged as a dangerous receiving threat, recording 18 catches for 255 yards. Cryer's ability to handle coverage responsibilities while communicating defensive adjustments could limit one of Mateer's favorite targets.
Jelani McDonald, Safety
Oklahoma receiver Isaiah Sategna has 20 receptions for 267 yards. His ability to turn short completions into explosive gains makes McDonald's open-field tackling especially important.
Texas defeated Oklahoma 23-6 last season, continuing its recent dominance in the rivalry.
But Saturday isn't about previous victories.
The Sooners have enough defensive talent to make life miserable for Manning, particularly if Texas struggles at the line of scrimmage.
For Sarkisian's Longhorns, the formula is familiar: Win the trenches, limit explosive plays and don't give Oklahoma an opening.
The Golden Hat is waiting.
The game will kick off on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT from the Cotton Bowl in Dallas and can be seen on ABC.
