Texas pitcher Sam Cozart picked up SEC Co-Freshman of the Week honors after two dominant saves helped the Longhorns take a big series from Alabama.

Texas Longhorns baseball continues to get a huge lift from freshman pitcher Sam Cozart, and the SEC took notice this week.

After a dominant showing against No. 11 Alabama, Cozart was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week, giving Texas yet another conference honor during a strong 2026 season.

The hard-throwing right-hander was a difference-maker all weekend in Austin. In two appearances during the series win over Alabama, Cozart locked down the back end of the bullpen and looked completely in control.

Over four scoreless innings, he allowed just one baserunner, did not give up a hit, and struck out eight of the 13 batters he faced.

Cozart’s first outing came in the opener, when he breezed through the final three innings. He retired nine straight hitters and needed only 39 pitches to finish the job.

He followed that by returning the next day and slamming the door again, striking out all three hitters he faced in the ninth inning of a 3-1 Texas win.

That final punchout wasn’t just the exclamation point on another save. It also gave the Longhorns 19 strikeouts for the game, matching the program’s best total in a nine-inning contest.

For Cozart, the latest recognition marks his second SEC weekly award of the season, further cementing his rise as one of the most reliable young arms in the conference.

Texas has now had five different players earn SEC weekly honors in 2026, a sign of just how deep and dangerous this roster has become.

The No. 4 Longhorns will try to keep rolling Tuesday night when they wrap up their homestand against Air Force at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With Cozart anchoring the bullpen, Texas looks increasingly tough to close out late.
