The Texas Tech Red Raiders saw their late-season momentum take a hit Tuesday night as TCU stunned No. 10 Texas Tech 73-65 in Lubbock, snapping the Red Raiders’ three-game winning streak and shaking up the Big 12 race.
Texas Tech entered the night riding high after climbing back into the AP Top 10, but the Horned Frogs had other plans.
The difference came down to the dominance of TCU forward Xavier Edmonds, who delivered one of his best performances of the season. Edmonds finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, controlling the paint and delivering the dagger late in the game.
With under a minute to play and TCU protecting a narrow lead, Edmonds cleaned up a miss and converted a putback layup with 31 seconds remaining, pushing the Frogs ahead 71-65 and effectively sealing the upset.
TCU’s victory continues an impressive late-season surge.
The Horned Frogs have now won seven of their last eight games, including three victories over Top 10 teams during that stretch - a run that has significantly boosted their NCAA Tournament hopes.
For Texas Tech, the loss highlighted the challenge of adjusting without star forward J.T. Toppin, who recently suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
Despite the setback, the Red Raiders had been playing strong basketball entering the matchup.
Several players stepped up offensively for Tech.
Sharpshooter Donovan Atwell led the Red Raiders with 19 points, knocking down five 3-pointers and extending his Texas Tech single-season record to 115 made 3s.
Guard Jaylen Petty added 17 points, while standout sophomore Christian Anderson contributed 11 points and nine assists, continuing to orchestrate the offense.
But Texas Tech struggled to find consistent scoring when it mattered most.
After the teams were tied at 50-50 midway through the second half, TCU gradually seized control.
A 3-pointer from Liutauras Lelevicius stretched the Horned Frogs’ lead late, forcing Tech to chase the game in the closing minutes.
The Red Raiders still finished the season with an impressive 14-2 home record, but the defeat served as a reminder that the Big 12 rarely offers easy nights.
Texas Tech now shifts its focus to the regular-season finale on the road at BYU, where the Red Raiders will look to regain momentum heading into the postseason.
