Red Raiders QB Sorsby Ranked Among the Best in Early Projections cover image

Sorsby's electrifying performance and impressive stats land him among college football's elite. Texas Tech's star QB is poised to lead the Red Raiders to championship contention.

Three minutes into the game against Oklahoma State on the road in Stillwater, Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby led his team down the field and threw a touchdown pass to Cyrus Allen to take an early 7-0 lead. It was Sorsby’s first of five touchdowns that night as the Bearcats defeated the Cowboys 49-17.

Sorsby led the Big 12 Conference in quarterback rating at 155.15 and was third in yards per attempt at 8.3. For the season, Sorsby accounted for over 3,300 total yards and 36 touchdowns. He entered the transfer portal as the No. 1 quarterback prospect.

In an early QB projection from J.D. PicKell of On3, he ranks Sorsby as No. 4 on his list of the top ten quarterbacks for the 2026 season.

Sorsby was not in the portal long when Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire offered him a princely sum of $5 million to quarterback the Red Raiders. Now, the Texas Tech offense will be, arguably, the best in the Big 12.

With Sorsby on board, Texas Tech got an immediate upgrade. In the passing game, Sorsby will throw to returning receiver Coy Eakin, tight end Terrance Carter Jr. and former Auburn transfer wideout Malcolm Simmons.

Also, running backs Cam Dickey and J’Koby Williams are good at catching the football out of the backfield, as they combined for 60 catches for 612 receiving yards.

Sorsby is in good company in the top five on this list, joining Dante Moore (Oregon), Julian Sayin (Ohio State), Arch Manning (Texas) and Josh Hoover (Indiana).

Last season, the Red Raiders suffered a 23-0 loss to Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals behind poor quarterback play from Behren Morton: 56 percent completion rate, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

After winning the Big 12 title last season, Texas Tech is projected as a playoff team again in 2026. With Sorsby at quarterback, he could be the missing piece needed to win a national championship.
