Texas Tech baseball trimmed a six-run deficit to three but couldn’t finish the comeback in a 6-3 road loss to Utah on Sunday.

Texas Tech baseball couldn’t fully recover from a rough start Sunday, falling 6-3 to Utah at America First Ballpark after digging out of an early six-run deficit.

The Red Raiders showed some life in the middle innings and got strong work from the bullpen, but the early damage proved too much to overcome in the Big 12 series finale.

For Texas Tech baseball, the biggest issue was the opening stretch. Utah struck first in the bottom of the first and kept applying pressure in the third, building a 6-0 lead before the Red Raiders could settle in.

Cal Miller did much of the damage for the Utes, while Texas Tech’s offense missed a few early chances to flip momentum before Utah took control.

Still, there were encouraging signs for the Red Raiders. Linkin Garcia sparked the offense with a leadoff home run in the fourth, his fourth of the season and first since February.

In the fifth, Texas Tech finally put together the kind of rally it had been chasing all afternoon. Kyeler Thompson doubled, Tracer Lopez followed with an RBI triple, and Logan Hughes added a run-scoring single to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.

That was as close as Tech would get, but the bullpen gave the team every opportunity. Jonny Lowe delivered 3.2 perfect innings in relief, while freshman Logan Addison continued his strong recent run with 1.2 scoreless frames.

The pair combined for 5.1 innings of one-hit relief, struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk. Addison has now allowed only one run over his last eight appearances and has worked 7.2 consecutive scoreless innings.

At the plate, Hughes finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Lopez went 2-for-4 with the RBI triple. Lopez also extended his hitting streak to nine games and moved into a tie for ninth on Texas Tech’s all-time hits list with 218 career hits.

Texas Tech, now 20-19 overall and 6-12 in Big 12 play, returns home Tuesday to open a five-game week against Tarleton State at Rip Griffin Park.
