Texas Tech Lady Red Raiders Add New Mexico Scorer cover image

Texas Tech women’s basketball landed New Mexico transfer Destinee Hooks, adding a proven three-level scorer to Krista Gerlich’s roster.

Texas Tech women’s basketball added a major scoring piece Friday, signing former New Mexico guard Destinee Hooks out of the transfer portal.

Hooks gives Krista Gerlich and the Lady Raiders a proven offensive weapon with experience, production and a track record of showing up in big moments.

Over two seasons at New Mexico, Hooks scored 908 points, made 87 3-pointers, grabbed 233 rebounds and added 57 steals.

Gerlich called Hooks “one of the most underrated, prolific scoring guards in the portal,” praising her ability to score at all three levels and defend multiple positions.

Texas Tech has seen that skill set up close. Hooks scored 24 points against the Lady Raiders on Nov. 23, 2025, after putting up 28 against Texas Tech the previous season. Now, those buckets are headed to Lubbock.

As a junior in 2025-26, Hooks started 31 games and played in all 32 for New Mexico. She led the Lobos in scoring at 13.4 points per game, total points with 428, made field goals with 157, made free throws with 70 and 3-pointers with 44.

She also added 105 rebounds, 32 assists and 29 steals while helping New Mexico finish 21-11 overall.

Her best game came in the Mountain West Tournament quarterfinals, when she scored a career-high 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting. Hooks finished the season with 25 double-digit scoring games and earned All-Mountain West honors.

Before New Mexico, Hooks began her college career at Vincennes University, where she averaged 21.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.9 steals as a freshman. She was named Region 24 Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and a Second Team NJCAA All-American.

For Texas Tech, Hooks brings instant scoring punch and toughness to a roster built to compete at the Power Four level.
