Texas Tech softball heads into a pivotal week with momentum, star power and a shot to lock up the Big 12 regular-season title.
The Red Raiders, ranked No. 2/5 and sitting at 42-4 overall and 16-2 in conference play, open with a Wednesday doubleheader at UTEP before closing the regular-season road slate with a three-game series at Arizona State.
The math is simple for Tech. Win two of three in Tempe, and the Red Raiders secure at least a share of the Big 12 crown. Sweep the Sun Devils, and the title belongs to them outright.
This trip also carries some personal meaning. Desirae Spearman returns home to El Paso playing some of the best softball of her career.
The junior has been a steady force in the lineup, batting .345 with nine home runs and 39 RBI, and she’ll have plenty of support in the stands for the twin bill against the Miners.
Few players in the country can match the résumé of Mihyia Davis, who continues to stack historic numbers. Among active players, she leads in hits (323), at-bats (794) and stolen bases (131), while also ranking second in runs scored with 223.
She remains the only active player to reach the 300-hit mark.
In the circle, NiJaree Canady is still rewriting the record book. The reigning National Pitcher of the Year recently moved past 1,000 career strikeouts and followed that with an eye-popping 18-strikeout performance against Utah.
She’s also the only active player in the sport with both 1,000 strikeouts and 90 wins.
Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Terry has been dominant on both sides of the ball, hitting .521, carrying a 1.48 ERA and posting a 17-1 record.
Add in a school-record 24-game hitting streak and a current 34-game on-base streak, and it’s easy to see why postseason expectations are soaring.
With Jackie Lis climbing to 58 career home runs and Lauren Allred heating up late, Texas Tech looks every bit like a team built for a championship push.
