Quarterback Joe Fagnano and wide receiver Skyler Bell have been waiting the chance to take the field for the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, respectively.

Could a left ankle and a left shoulder put former UConn Huskies Joe Fagnano and Skyler Bell closer to their NFL debuts?

Possibly.

Fagnano and Bell have yet to be part of the weekly active rosters during their rookie seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, respectively, despite outstanding final college seasons and impressive preseasons.

Fagnano has been the emergency third quarterback for the Ravens behind two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson and veteran backup Tyler Huntley. Bell, a first-team All-American as a Huskies senior, has yet to find his way into the wide receiver rotation in Buffalo.

Lamar Jackson’s ankle

Baltimore (3-1) removed Jackson from its 24-18 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday after he sprained his left ankle near the end of the first half. Prior to the injury, the 29-year-old completed 15 of 20 pass attempts for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Jackson’s ankle injury left him with just an “outside chance” to play on “Sunday Night Football” in a clash with the Atlanta Falcons (2-2). Rapoport said Jackson’s injury isn’t believed to be long-term or require surgery. Still, Jackson could miss “multiple games” in the 2026-27 season, he said.

The Ravens selected Jackson with the final pick (No. 32) of the first round in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Fagnano took the opposite path, signing as a free agent after going undrafted in the 2026 draft in April. A longshot to make the 53-man NFL roster, Fagnano impressed in training camp and was kept to back up Jackson and Huntley.

D.J. Moore’s shoulder

The Buffalo Bills acquired Moore in a trade with the Chicago Bears in March. They sent their second-round pick (No. 60 overall) in the 2026 NFL Draft to Chicago for Moore and the Bears’ 2026 fifth round draft (pick No. 165).

Moore, 29, obviously had been coveted for both his durability and productivity. In his first eight seasons in the league with the Carolina Panthers (2018-22) and Bears (2023-25), he never played fewer than 15 games and had four seasons of more than 1,100 receiving yards, plus 41 career touchdowns.

This season, he has appeared in four games (three starts) with 12 receptions for 178 yards and a TD, but he hasn’t been operating at full speed.

Moore emerged from the Bills’ win in Week 2 with a shoulder injury but tried to play through it. Last Sunday, after landing on the left shoulder, Moore was removed from the game against the New England Patriots before halftime of Buffalo’s 29-26 defeat.

After the game, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Moore’s injury was not thought to be “a long-term issue as of right now.”

Joe Brady, the first-year head coach of the Bills (3-1), has not given an official update in advance of his team’s upcoming “Monday Night Football” game against the Los Angeles Rams (2-2).

The Bills selected Bell in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Potential opportunities

No one wishes ill for Jackson or Moore, but if they can’t play this Sunday, Fagnano and Bell should be ready to go if called upon. A program record-setting duo who played key roles in UConn’s back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2024 and ’25, the two surely are being wished success by Huskies fans.
