The University of Connecticut football team will play Army on Saturday afternoon (2:15 p.m. ET) in the Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park.
However, it's also time to turn the page to 2026, and new head coach Jason Candle is doing just that.
Campanile just wrapped up his third season with the Orange, and he had much success in the first two.
As noted by the Syracuse website, in his first year quarterbacks broke or tied 24 different program individual and team passing or total offense records (career, season and single-game) and starting quarterback Kyle McCord finished in the top-10 of Heisman Trophy voting after setting a new ACC single-season passing record.
He also helped lead the Orange to a 10-win season and a Holiday Bowl victory in 2024.
However, this year, it was a different story. After Steve Angeli got hurt in the fourth game of the season, the Orange failed to win another game. A rotating group of young quarterbacks all got chances, but none were really prepared to play. The Orange had one of the worst offenses in the country, and its 20.2 ppg total was outside the Top-100.
In addition to Syracuse, Campanile has served on staff at Rutgers. He was also the head coach of high school power Bergen Catholic and he was on staff at famed Don Basco Prep.
Well, it's pretty simple. If you believe that Campanile had a real hand in the solid season's from McCord and Angeli, then the loss is substantial. In that case, you'd likely be writing off the offensive performance in 2025 as a result of Angeli's injury.
However, if you think that McCord's prior development at Ohio State and Angeli's prior development at Notre Dame were the real causes of their success, then you may not think Campanile was all that integral a member of the staff.
If you think that? Then you probably blame Campanile for failing to develop Rickie Follins, Luke Carney or Joseph Filardi this season.
More UConn stories
All-everything quarterback Joe Fagnano is set to graduate and Candle will have his hands full trying to replace Fagano, running back Cam Edwards and All-American receiver Skyler Bell. Edwards is going to the transfer portal and Bell is graduating.
Campanile will play a major role in helping to do that, and we'll quickly learn just how good a quarterback developer he is.
Given Campanile's high school and college roots in New Jersey, he should serve as a valuable recruiter for Candle's staff as well, which could be an underrated part of what he'll bring to Storrs.
Interestingly enough, Campanile is not the only way in which these coaching staffs are intertwined. Candle was the previous head coach at Toledo. Syracuse just hired his old defensive coordinator, Vince Kehrles, to the same position.
