The University of Connecticut men's basketball team beat unranked Villanova 75-67 in overtime on Saturday afternoon, moving to 19-1 overall on the season and 9-0 inside Big East play.
The Huskies have flirted with that first league loss a few times over the last few weeks, also needing overtime to beat Providence and needing a big comeback to beat Seton Hall. They beat Georgetown by just two last Saturday (64-62), yet they've remained impenetrable to other Big East foes.
While this win wasn't always pretty, it was gritty, especially considering the Huskies played most of the second half without super talented freshman Braylon Mullins, who left the game after taking an elbow to the forehead.
He did return to the bench after this, but he did not re-enter the contest.
After the game, head coach Dan Hurley gave this update to the media:
“He goes into concussion protocol obviously… we’ll see where things go from there… we’ll take good care of him like we did with Alex last year.”
A McDonalds All-American from the state of Indiana, Mullins has been an impact player for Hurley's squad. After missing most of the first month with an ankle injury, he's now averaging 11.6 ppg for the season (entering play). He had eight points on 4-of-8 shooting before leaving the game on Saturday.
He had 24 in that overtime win against Providence back on Jan. 7. While it's not known if he will leave school after one year, he has a chance to be an NBA lottery pick.
UConn will take on Providence again on Jan. 27, this time at home (7:30 p.m. ET). We will see if Mullins is able to recover in that time for contest, but if not, the Huskies then play on Jan. 31 against Creighton, but that game is on the road.
--The UConn women, playing on Saturday instead of Sunday because of the looming snowstorm, trounced Seton Hall by 36 points. The No. 1 Huskies are still unbeaten on the season. Sarah Strong led the way with 18 points while Azzi Fudd had 16. Read that recap here.
--UConn standout wide receiver Skyler Bell is preparing to play in the Shrine Bowl on Jan. 27. Bell was the first-ever AP First-Team All-American in school history in 2025. He helped the Huskies go 9-4 and earn an appearance in the Fenway Bowl.
