The University of Connecticut women's basketball team will play the LSU Tigers in a marquee matchup in the 2026-27 season.
Head coach Geno Auriemma wasn't planning on announcing the contest, but he did confirm when asked by reporters on Sunday. His former player Rebecca Lobo, now a member of the media, is the one who broke the matchup on a podcast.
"People join the media and they can't keep a secret," he said playfully. Auriemma said that he doesn't have a date for the matchup yet, but that he hopes it's a late-season non-conference showdown, like the ones UConn is playing against Notre Dame and Tennessee this season.
We also know that the Huskies will play South Carolina next season in another premier matchup.
One of the top programs in the country, the Tigers were ranked No. 6 in the last AP Top 25 poll. They are currently 16-2 overall and 2-2 inside SEC play.
The Tigers, coached by Kim Mulkey, have been to the Elite 8 or better in each of the last three years - and won the national title in 2022-23. LSU has been to the NCAA Tournament 30 times and has advanced to the Final Four six times.
Ranked No. 1 in the latest poll, the Huskies are currently 18-0 and 9-0 inside Big East play. The reigning national champions, UConn has bulldozed nearly everyone they've played this season. Only one game has been within 10 points.
Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd make up the best duo in the nation, and Strong will be back next season for that matchup with LSU.
--As mentioned above, the Huskies will take on Notre Dame on Monday night at 5 p.m. ET. The Irish were ranked No. 23 in the latest AP Poll and will represent a challenge for Auriemma's bunch. Notre Dame has actually beaten UConn in its last three matchups.
--The No. 3-ranked UConn men's basketball team is also rolling right now. They are sitting at 18-1 and 8-0 inside the league. They won't see the floor again until Saturday afternoon (Jan. 24), when they host Villanova. They just barely survived a 64-62 win over Georgetown on Saturday.
--Though entrance to the transfer portal (mostly) closed on Friday, the UConn football team is continuing to make roster additions. New head coach Jason Candle officially brought in two defensive backs on Sunday, including Moussa Kane, formerly of Duke.
