It was trending this way, but Cam Edwards has a new home.

Brady Farkas on Cam Edwards officially leaving Connecticut.

It was trending this way for the last few days, but the University of Connecticut has officially lost star running back Cam Edwards in the transfer portal.

He announced on social media on Wednesday that he was signing on with Michigan State for his final season. We heard over the weekend that he was going to visit MSU, and he was at the Spartans basketball game on Monday night.

Why would he want to leave Storrs?

In today's college football world, where mobility is essentially endless, it's not really worth speculating why someone wants to leave. But at the end of the day, Edwards gave three years to his hometown university. That's more loyalty than almost anyone in modern college football gives.

The timing all lines up for Edwards to leave as well: His star teammates Joe Fagnano and Skyler Bell are set to graduate and won't be here in 2026, and his head coach Jim Mora has moved onto Colorado State as well.

It's essentially a new program under Jason Candle, and while there's plenty of optimism, it's understandable why Edwards would want to try something new.

More on Edwards

A Connecticut native, Edwards played at nearby Norwalk High School. He became the first Huskies running back since 2019 to reach the 1,000-yard plateau, pairing with Fagnano and Bell to make up a dynamic offense. Bell was named an AP First Team All-American. The Huskies went 9-4 and lost in the Fenway Bowl to Army (41-16).

Edwards ran for 2,690 yards at Connecticut and 27 touchdowns. He also had 47 receptions and four touchdowns.

More UConn stories:

What's waiting for him at Michigan State?

Hopefully an opportunity to help turn around the program there. A proud program with a good history, MSU has fallen on tough times. They went 4-8 in 2025, 5-7 in 2024, 4-8 in 2023 and 5-7 in 2022.

Playing in the Big Ten should give him better exposure for a subsequent NFL career, as well as opportunities to play in some big-time venues. Those experiences will be valuable for Edwards as well.

Also on campus

Both the UConn men's and women's basketball teams will be back in action on Wednesday night. The No. 1 women will be in action at home against St. John's while the No. 4 men are on the road at Providence.

Both teams have been the class of the Big East so far in 2025-26.
