New University of Connecticut head football coach Jason Candle is doing his best to put the Huskies in a position to win in 2026.
Since the end of the season (Dec. 27), Candle has gotten to work on filling out an experienced staff, and he's put in significant work already in the first days of the transfer portal.
However, just because the program is looking forward, it doesn't mean that we can't take another look back at the 2025 Huskies, who made some history not seen in 15 years.
The Huskies went unbeaten at home for the first time since 2010? UConn was 9-4 for the season, but each of those losses came on neutral sites or in away games (Syracuse, Delaware, Rice, Army).
The Huskies defeated Central Connecticut, Ball State, Florida International, Alabama-Birmingham, Duke, and Air Force to go 6-0 at Rentschler Field.
They also won games at Buffalo, Boston College and Florida Atlantic.
It was a banner year for Connecticut, who got outstanding quarterback play from Joe Fagnano (3,448 yards, 28 touchdowns, ONE interception), and running back Cam Edwards, who posted a 1,000-yard season.
Furthermore, receiver Skyler Bell was named a first-team Associated Press All-American. He is the first one in the history of the program and is expected to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft. Fagnano could be selected as well.
Previous head coach Jim Mora led the Huskies to consecutive nine-win seasons before jumping ship to Colorado State, where he was recently named as the head coach.
More UConn stories:
Candle was hired after a successful run at Toledo of the Mid-American Conference. Working at UConn has its challenges because of the lack of conference affiliation and the NIL situation, but he seems uniquely qualified to take on the challenge.
And he'll need to be, as Fagnano and Bell are graduating, and Edwards is in the transfer portal. He could come back to school, but it seems unlikely, and he just visited Michigan State of the Big Ten.
--The UConn men's basketball team was ranked No. 4 in the country in the most recent AP poll. They are 14-1 and 4-0 inside Big East play. They'll be back in action on Wednesday night (7 p.m. ET) at Providence.
--The UConn women's basketball team remains No. 1 in the poll as they continue to dominate the competition. At 15-0 and 6-0 inside league play, they have only played one game within double-digits this season. They'll play St. John's on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET. That game is in Hartford, Conn.
