New Huskies head coach Jason Candle has the unenviable task of replacing UConn's prolific quarterback, wide receiver and running back.

Cam Edwards, UConn’s electric running back, intends to enter the transfer portal.

A redshirt junior, he has one year of eligibility remaining. His name showed up Thursday in the 247Sports transfer portal listing.

Edwards was part of the Huskies’ three-headed offensive monster in 2025, joining quarterback Joe Fagnano and wide receiver Skyler Bell -- both seniors -- on a team that finished 9-3. The Huskies have a chance at the program’s first 10-win season pending the outcome of the Fenway Bowl against Army later this month.

The transfer portal does not officially open until Jan. 2.

Edwards played in all 12 regular-season games and ran for 1,132 yards with 14 touchdowns, averaging 94.3 yards per game. He added 187 yards and one score on 19 receptions.

In his UConn career, Edwards ran for 2,582 yards on 469 carries in 35 games. He rushed for 26 touchdowns and added four on pass receptions.

Edwards, who is from Connecticut, played at Norwalk High School and spoke earlier this season about how proud he was to stay in state.

“They don’t really respect CT people,” Edwards said in a CTInsider article in September. “CT players, they don't really get the shine that they should. I'm just trying to make it out of here and make CT proud. … Sky’s the limit for CT.”

A reunion?

Edwards will have many suitors in the transfer portal. It's probably not an overreach to think that former UConn head coach Jim Mora will be one of them.

Mora, now the head coach at Colorado State, had this to say about Edwards in the CTInsider September article.

“He's dependable, he's a warrior, he's tough, he's gritty, he’s resilient,” Mora said of Edwards. “You want guys like that on your team, that you can count on.”

Mora said he watched Edwards grow from a freshman to the player he is today.

“He was a little bit immature,” Mora said. “I didn't know if he was going to make it. I didn't know if I really wanted him here, the way he conducted himself. He's grown up fast. I know things haven’t come easy for him. I think he's had to fight. And I love that. As he goes, we go. Mentally and physically, he is freakin’ tough. It's been a rewarding experience for four years now, watching that kid, what he's turning into.”

Post-Mora exodus

Edwards is just the most recent player to express his intention to transfer.

The UConn roster has been decimated since the departure of Mora. According to 247Sports’ charts, nine players aside in addition to Edwards are expected to be available in the transfer portal.

On top of that, 11 committed players pulled their commitments from the Huskies. Six of them signed their national letters of intent with Colorado State, sold on playing for Mora.

Five players inked their paperwork to play for UConn during the early signing period last week.

New head coach Jason Candle got great news on Tuesday with the commitment of three-star quarterback Bo Polston from Decatur Central High School in Indiana. Polston signed his letter of intent last week with Toledo, where Candle was the head coach before accepting the UConn job last Saturday.

Candle undoubtedly will be scouring the transfer portal to find replacements to bolster the UConn roster.
