The Lady Huskies remained undefeated after a dominant showing against the visiting Jaguars

SEATTLE — The No. 22-ranked Washington Huskies women's basketball continued to stay perfect in a 66-40 win against the visiting Southern University Jaguars on Tuesday at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.

The Huskies spent nearly 94% of the game leading against the Jaguars. They led for 37 minutes, 33 seconds of the 40-minute regulation.

"Saw some improvement today in some areas," Washington head coach Tina Langley said after the game Tuesday. "Saw some areas we want to continue to improve on. Thought the defense continues to get a little bit better each game. Obviously we'd love to take a little bit better care with the basketball than we did today. But we still had good some moments on that end of execution."

For the second game in a row, the Huskies were able to hold their opponents to 10 points or less per quarter.

Washington forced Southern University to commit 18 turnovers and scored 19 points off them.

On the offensive end, a third of the Huskies' points were second-chance.

"The defense on the floor is giving us an opportunity to make a quick change of possession and impact on the other end," Langley said.

The Dawgs ended the first quarter up 19-8 and led by double-digits the rest of the game.

Leading the way for Washington's offense was sophomore guard and Southern California (USC) transfer Avery Howell.

The Boise, Idaho, native put up a game-high 18 points on a 6-for-10 clip from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. She hit three 3-pointers on seven attempts and added five rebounds and two steals. Her 18 points matched a season-high, which she hit in the first game of the season against Seattle U on Nov. 3.

"That was definitely a fun game to (start the season) with," Howell said Tuesday. "But I just think my defense has improved a lot since being in this program. This style of defense that we're all playing this year is super up-temp, up-beat. We're switching a lot but it's just a lot of fun and it's really aggressive. That's definitely been a part of the last couple games, I think my defense has been pretty good. Just trying to be where my team needs me, honestly, and in the right spots."

Howell was joined in double-figures by freshman forward Brynn McGaughy.

The five-star recruit posted her second-straight game of 14 or more points. McGaughy put up 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting, including a 1-for-3 mark from beyond the arc, and went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. She pulled in four rebounds and blocked three shots.

"I think (my confidence) just comes down to my teammates, honestly," McGaughy said Tuesday. "If I have a bad game, they're telling me to stay in it and just keep pushing. The work, I think, before and after practice, that always helps. Coach is always with me."

The Huskies will play the fourth of five-straight home games against UC San Diego at 7 p.m. PT on Nov. 28 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
