The Huskies improved to 2-0 on the season behind freshman Hannes Steinbach's double-double

SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies men's basketball team showed off its depth in an 84-70 win against the Denver Pioneers on Thursday at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Seven players, including four of Washington's starting five, scored in double-digits.

"Anybody can put the ball in the basket," Huskies sophomore guard Wesley Yates III said in a postgame interview Thursday. "Takes a lot of pressure off everybody just knowing you can go out there and play freely. Can move the ball a lot, and just knowing that your teammates always got your back, knowing that the burden isn't always gonna be on one person and knowing it can be anybody's night and knowing everybody plays selfless. We all know the ball's gonna come back around."

Despite the quantity of capable Washington scorers, Denver stayed in the game until the final minutes.

With 11:49 left in the first half, the Pioneers led 17-16 after an 8-0 run. The Huskies outscored their opponents 21-11 the rest of the period and went into the break with a 37-28 lead, with Denver still within striking distance.

Both teams scored more in the second half. Once again, the Pioneers made it competitive but failed to make up the gap.

Washington led 50-36 with 16:02 left in the second half. Denver was able to cut its deficit to single digits several times, and the Huskies' led 70-63 with 5:56 remaining in the game. The Dawgs were able to gain some distance in the early stages of the second half in part to three consecutive 3-point makes from sophomore forward Bryson Tucker. He went 4-for-11 from the field, including his trio of triples, for 11 points and brought in seven rebounds.

Washington outscored the Pioneers 14-7 the rest of the way for the eventual final of 84-70.

Huskies freshman forward Hannes Steinbach posted the first career double-double of his career. He scored a team-high 13 points (Yates also had 13) with 16 rebounds, four assists, a steal and two blocks.

It was the first double-digit scoring game for freshman guard JJ Mandaquit. He finished with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting, two rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a block.

Yates had two rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block to go with his 13 points.

Sophomore guard Zoom Diallo scored seven of his 12 points in the final 5:32 of the game. He was 3-for-8 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. He had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

"The one thing I like about our team is when we show them film, they apply it," Washington coach Danny Sprinkle said in a postgame interview. "They see it, they don't take it personal. And we get better. And we have, from UNLV to (Boise State) to (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) to tonight, I know we're gonna be better."

The Huskies will next be in action on the road against Baylor at 5:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 9 in Waco, Texas.
