
The Washington Huskies men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in a 78-69 result against the Baylor Bears on Sunday at Foster Pavilion in Waco, Texas. UW dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
The Bears were the first Power Four opponent of the season for the Huskies, and displayed the different in talent compared to Washington's previous two opponents, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and the Denver Pioneers.
The Huskies had the advantage through a large portion of the first half.
Washington led Baylor 17-15 with 11:06 left in the first half. The Bears went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-17 lead with 9:46 left in the first period and didn't give up the lead for the rest of the game.
The Huskies got within one possession several times in the remaining time in the first half, but weren't able to come even with or take the lead back from Baylor.
The Bears went into halftime with a 38-32 lead.
In the second half, Washington did its best to close the gap against Baylor, but were stonewalled whenever it got back within striking distance.
The Bears were up by as much as 11 points in the second half. The Huskies were able to get within two possessions three times in the second half. Washington trailed Baylor 73-68 with 2:12 left in the game.
A large part of the Huskies' second-half surges was due to sophomore guard Zoom Diallo. He had a team-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting (3-for-4 from the free-throw line). He pulled in four rebounds and dished two assists.
Diallo scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half. He was the only Washington player to put up double-digit points in the second half.
The next-highest second-half scorers for the Huskies were freshman forward Hannes Steinbach (six points) and freshman guard JJ Mandaquit (six points).
Steinbach finished the game with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting (2-for-3 from the charity stripe), brought in 15 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Mandaquit finished the game 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Washington's other double-digit scorer was senior guard Quimari Peterson. He put up 11 points on a 4-for-13 clip from the floor (2-for-2 from the free-throw line). He had three steals, two rebounds and two assists.
The Huskies will next be in action against in-state rivals Washington State at 8 p.m. PT on Nov. 14 at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.
