SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies men's basketball team has had a solid start to the season. The Huskies are 2-0 after double-digit wins against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 3 and Denver on Nov. 6.
Entering the season, Washington revealed new and revamped uniforms that it will break out at varying points in the season. But the changes for the program have gone beyond just its threads, it's extended to the most vital piece of equipment on the court.
The Huskies are an Adidas school and get their gear from the sportswear giant. That extends to uniforms, sneakers, training gear, off-the-court clothing and the basketball.
Adidas released a new basketball this past summer, which Washington has used since receiving it in July.
Several players and Huskies head coach Danny Sprinkle had some critiques on the new ball after the team's 84-70 win against Denver on Thursday.
"With us being one of the elite Adidas schools, we use it," Sprinkle said Thursday. "It's not bad. It's better than what we had last year. But it seems like it's too bouncy. We probably got to figure something out with that. ... We probably got it mid July when it came out, that's when Adidas sent it to all of the schools. ... So we've had it for a couple months. Denver made their shots. I don't know if they're an Adidas school. We shot the ball well, too, but it may be slick. But we got to adjust just like the other team."
Washington outpaced Denver in overall shooting Thursday (50.8% from the floor vs. 44.3%). The Huskies took some time to adjust beyond the arc.
In the first half Thursday, Washington was 1-for-6 from 3-point range in the first half and 6-for-14 in the second half. The Pioneers were 4-for-15 from beyond the arc in the first half and 4-for-12 in the second.
"I sweat so much," sophomore guard Wesley Yates III said in a postgame interview. "You see tonight, I was 0-for-3 from the 3-point line. Had two misses that were nowhere near the rim. I feel like my hands (can be) too sweaty for the ball at moments. That's why I always try to keep a towel."
Sophomore center Lathan Sommerville echoed his teammates assessment on the ball being slick.
"I'm cool with it, but it gets a little slippery," Sommerville said. "That's about my only complaint."
The Huskies won't always be playing with the new Adidas ball. In the team's next game, it will play Baylor at 5:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 9 in Waco, Texas. The Bears are a Nike team.
