SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies men's basketball team have had a good start to the season.
The Huskies are 2-0 after a 94-50 win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Nov. 3 and an 84-70 win against Denver on Nov. 6. Both games were at the team's home court of Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
In the win against Denver, Washington had seven players score in double-figures and four players with three or more assists.
The Huskies will have their first big test of the season in their next contest. They'll head down south to play Baylor at 5:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 9 in Waco, Texas.
"(Baylor head coach Scott Drew's) obviously one of the top coaches in the country," Washington coach Danny Sprinkle said in a postgame interview Thursday. "Has a national championship. ... They've been phenomenal for a long time. Defensively, we have to get a lot better than we were (Thursday) in the next 72 hours. ... I know we're gonna be better. But it's gonna be a whole different physicality. Our rebounding has to improve. They're gonna be flying at the offensive glass. It's gonna be physical, there's not gonna be fouls called and we don't expect there to be fouls called. We got to commit. And we have to play with a nasty streak and we have to match their intensity on that."
The Huskies and Bears both found themselves outside the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 poll, but received votes. Washington received seven votes and Baylor received one vote. The Bears will be 1-0 going into the game against the Huskies.
"We're definitely ready," Washington forward Lathan Sommerville said in a postgame interview. "We're ready to step up to the challenge. I feel like as a program, from the head of the guys all the way to the bottom, we're ready as a group."
The Huskies entered the season with an almost-completely retooled roster. Only two of the 15-player roster were on the team last season.
So far, the influx of new talent to the team has paid dividends, and the game against Baylor will be a good indicator on how the team stacks up against other Power Four schools.
