
The Washington Huskies men's basketball team made a successful cross-state trek in an 81-69 Apple Cup victory against the Washington State Cougars on Friday at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.
The Huskies improved to 3-1 with the win while the Cougars dropped to 1-3.
Washington had four players score in double-figures in Friday's win.
One of those players was sophomore guard Wesley Yates III, who put up a game-high 26 points on 9-for-16 shooting. The former USC sharpshooter went 4-for-10 from 3-point range and brought in seven rebounds.
Yates put up 15 of his points in the first half. He, alongside freshman forward Hannes Steinbach accounted for more than half of Washington's offense. Yates hit a 3-pointer before the buzzer to send his team into halftime with a 44-30 lead.
Steinbach had 10 points at the break to go with nine rebounds. He finished the game with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting, 13 rebounds, a block and a steal. It was the German native's third-straight double-double.
The Cougars weren't content with letting their rivals run away with the win and made it competitive in the second half.
The Huskies bolstered their lead to 22 points (63-41) with 11:13 left in the game.
Washington State promptly responded and outscored Washington 18-4 in the next six minutes. The Cougars trailed 67-59 with 5:21 left in the game.
Washington State cut the lead down to single digits several times in the final five minutes of the contest but the Huskies always had an answer.
Sophomore Washington guard Zoom Diallo hit a 3-pointer with 2:29 left in the game to put his team up 75-63. and the Huskies held on to win by double-digits.
Diallo finished the game with 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting. He went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and had four rebounds, four assists and a steal.
The Huskies will have one more game at home before heading to Palm Desert, Calif., for the Acrisure Holiday Classic.
Washington will play Southern University at 6:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 18 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. The Huskies will play Nevada on Nov. 27 and Colorado on Nov. 28 as part of the Acrisure Holiday Classic.
