This runs contrary to everything I've written about Fisch, and here's what I mean.

On Friday, we learned that the University of Florida is potentially interested in University of Washington head coach Jedd Fisch for its vacant football head coaching position.

Fisch has been connected to new jobs most of the season, but he's remained focused on the task at hand with the Huskies, who are 8-3 heading into Saturday's regular season finale against No. 6 Oregon.

The Huskies are trying to earn a better bowl game out of the contest, and they are also looking to play spoiler on the Ducks' College Football Playoff aspirations. The game will be played at 12:30 p.m. PT at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

I don't know if Florida is going to formally reach out to Fisch, and I don't know if he'd accept if they make an offer. But if he does? I'll honestly understand it, and I'll honestly be okay with it.

    Let's examine:

This runs contrary to everything I've said

I want to acknowledge this up front, and I don't want to be a hypocrite.

I believe that Washington is a great job. It's a program that plays in a great conference and has great history. It has a beautiful stadium, a beautiful city, a first-class education and access to great recruiting bases in Washington, California and Hawaii.

You can win at Washington, even in the Big 10. And the new CFP format makes it a little bit easier to get into the playoff and compete for a national championship. That's the goal of every program.

It's also a job that pays well - not elite - but well, and Fisch could certainly get a raise if he elects to stay.

College football coaches are aspirational, and they are always looking to climb the ladder. Washington should be at, or near, the top of that ladder for people. And I've always said that Fisch should stay, especially since he's just barely about to have completed his second season.

    An unfortunate reality

While I personally a believe a two-year stay at Washington is too short for Fisch, the rest of the college football landscape disagrees.

The entire sport is now built on disloyalty. Coaches have always been to able to leave whenever they wanted, and they often do, and now players can too.

I don't love it, but it's the game we're playing.

    The real point

Both points I made above are true: I believe Washington is a great job and I wouldn't want to leave it, even though the current culture of college football makes it "OK" to do so.

So why would I be OK with Fisch leaving Washington for Florida?

Because it's home. It's his alma mater. It's where he got his first coaching job.

As great as Washington is, as great as the idea of loyalty is, it's not home, and it doesn't offer the ability to come full-circle in your career.

I still hold onto the romantic notion of college football, of players and coaches staying loyal to a university they love. Those days are mostly done, but there's nothing more romantic than the idea of a hometown guy coming home to rescue his university.

In any other case, I'd look down upon a Jedd Fisch exit, but for Florida? I'd completely understand.
