The Washington Huskies men's basketball team have several legends that have stepped through the program throughout its history, and two of the biggest names to step in the Pacific Northwest will be honored this season.
On Wednesday, the Huskies announced in a post on the official account on "X" that they will retire the numbers of Christian Welp (No. 40) and Detlef Schrempf (No. 22).
Welp and Schrempf will join three other men's basketball players to have their numbers retired: Brandon Roy, Isaiah Thomas and Bob Houbregs.
"The story of Washington basketball cannot be told without Christian Welp and Detlef Schrempf," Huskies athletic director Pat Chun said in a news release. "Both were pioneers of international basketball, elevated the game globally, and had exceptional careers on Montlake. We look forward to honoring their impact and celebrating their lasting place in UW history later this season."
Welp will have his number retired before a game against Ohio State on Jan. 11 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
Schrempf will have his number retired before a game against Wisconsin on Feb. 28 at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Welp and Schrempf were both German natives but played high school ball in Washington before coming to Seattle. Welp played with the Huskies from 1983-1987 and Schrempf was with the program from 1981-1985.
In the two years of overlap between Welp and Schrempf, Washington made multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen berth in 1984 and made the NCAA Tournament again in 1985. At the time, it was the program's first Sweet Sixteen appearance in over three decades.
Welp is the program's all-time leading scorer and is the only Husky men's player ever to score 2,000 points. He was an all-conference player three times and was the 1986 Pac-10 Player of the Year.
Schrempf was a two-time all-conference selection and was the team's captain his senior season.
Both players were first-round NBA Draft selections. Schrempf was selected eighth overall in the 1985 NBA Draft and had a 17-season career. He returned to the PNW and played with the Seattle Supersonics from 1993-1999 and helped them make the NBA Finals in '96.
Welp was selected 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1987 NBA Draft. He played in the NBA from '87-90 before playing another 10 seasons overseas from '90-99. He won the Greek League, Greek Cup and EuroLeague in '97 and was a seven-time German League winner.
