The Washington Huskies will be heading on the road for their first Big Ten away game of the season against the Maryland Terrapins at 12:30 p.m. PT on Saturday at SECU Stadium in College Park, Md.
Washington will enter the game 3-1 coming off a 24-6 loss at home against No. 1 Ohio State. Maryland will enter Saturday 4-0 off a 27-10 win against Wisconsin.
The Terrapins defense has been one of the most potent in the country this season. Maryland is tied for sixth in the nation among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in sacks (16) and is tied for fourth in the country with a plus-seven turnover margin.
"We got to protect the football," Huskies coach Jedd Fisch said in a post from the official Washington account on "X". "There's no other option than that. And we've got to be smart in the pocket. (Maryland's) had 16 sacks already this season. We understand what we're dealing with and we're gonna have to have a good plan for them."
Washington has been one of the better teams in the Big Ten this season when it comes to holding on to the football. The Huskies have turned the ball over just once this season in four games.
Outside of the Washington's game against the Buckeyes, the offense has been one of the best in the conference.
The Huskies are fourth in the Big Ten in yards per game (460.5) and fifth in points per game (43.3).
"We're gonna need to make sure that, defensively, we give a lot of different looks," Fisch said. " ... They've got young players at certain spots and then other spots they're very talented. We got to work it out for us. We got to play really hard and really well."
Despite having a potent offense and keeping pace with Ohio State through three quarters, Washington hasn't received a vote in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25. A win against Maryland, which was voted for several times in the last AP poll, could help the Huskies build credibility in the rankings and, most importantly, move up the Big Ten standings.
"We have to realize that winning on the road in the Big Ten is difficult," Fisch said. "It's a big challenge. And we have to be able to be fully focused, on the details and we got to come and bring our spirit and our enthusiasm and our energy, because we know it's going to be a really tough environment."
