The Huskies already have a pretty good idea at who the front runners are to take over for Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock
SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies football team began spring practice on Tuesday in Seattle. The Huskies will get a look at many young and promising players in the spring, several of whom will have an opportunity to step into starting roles.
Two of the top priorities for Washington will be to find replacements for their outside cornerback positions.
Both starters at the outside corner spot, Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock, have entered the NFL Draft.
Both cornerbacks have been highlight performers across the NFL Combine and the Huskies' pro day earlier this month and it will be a tall task (literally with the 6-foot-4 corners) to replace them.
But in the early stages of the offseason, the Huskies cornerback room seems ready for the challenge.
"Those guys are relishing the moment, to be honest," Washington secondary coach John Richardson said in a news conference Monday at Touchdown Terrace at Husky Stadium in Seattle. "They get an opportunity to go out there and showcase what they have. It's not like we went aggressively in the portal, previous relationship with (Emmanuel Karnley).
"(We believe) in the guys that we recruit and we develop them and put (those) guys out there on the field. They're excited. Make sure they understand that they have to earn that opportunity to be out there on the field. You don't just get to walk into it. But we're excited. Should be a fun competition, should be very spirited."
Virginia Cavaliers cornerback Emmanuel Karnley (19) celebrates after an interception against the Missouri Tigers during the third quarter of the Gator Bowl on Dec. 17 at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.There will be room for competition in the cornerback room but there are two early front runners to land the outside corner spots.
Sophomore cornerback Dylan Robinson and junior transfer cornerback Karnley (Virginia) are the front runners to land the starting roles and will take the initial first reps in spring practice. Redshirt freshman Ramonz Adams Jr. can also cement his status as the team's nickleback (or "star" in Huskies terminology).
Robinson, who played in 12 games last season as a true freshman, received praise from Prysock at the UW pro day.
Karnley spent last season with the Virginia Cavaliers. He registered 26 tackles (20 solo), had eight passes defended and an interception.
Rahshawn Clark, another candidate to win the nickelback job, will be out for spring practice but will be in the mix when he returns.
Multiple true freshmen could also find themselves in the cornerback rotation.
"(Freshman) Rahsjon Duncan's not here yet but I'm expecting him to be a huge part of that rotation," Washington head coach Jedd Fisch said in a news conference Monday. "(Freshman) Elijah Durr has looked fantastic in the offseason so far. ... Lot of flexibility there but the first set of plays will go to Dylan, who looks fantastic — looks like he should get himself to being a first round-pick one of these days here in the next couple years — and Manny Karnley."
The hierarchy of the position is established. But the rest of the corners will have their chances to be disruptors and carve out roles for themselves going into 2026.
