Hannes Steinbach and Bryson Tucker could be out for the next several games with respective ankle sprains.

SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies men's basketball team was able to come out on the winning end of a tough-as-nails opponent in the Southern University Jaguars on Tuesday.

The Huskies prevailed 98-93 in double-overtime to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Washington was shorthanded for the 50-minute victory due to a plethora of injuries.

Ankle sprains have plagued the Huskies this season. Desmond Claude didn't make his season debut until Tuesday due to a sprain, and sophomore forward Bryson Tucker has missed the last two games, including Tuesday, due to his own respective ankle sprain. Tucker's initial diagnosis had him out 2-3 weeks.

Freshman forward Hannes Steinbach was out for Washington's game against Southern U due to his own ankle injury. The German recruit had posted three-straight double-doubles before Tuesday's contest against the Jaguars.

According to Huskies coach Danny Sprinkle, it might be several weeks until both players return to the fold.

"(Hannes) and (Bryson Tucker), I don't have an update yet," Sprinkle said in a postgame news conference Tuesday. "They're both doing pretty well. I know they're both still pretty swollen up. That's why this group needs these couple days off, especially those guys, And even (Claude), just to get healthier and healthier. I don't know, I doubt they'll practice this week. Hopefully mid-next week they're back."

Steinbach and Tucker have both been valuable and necessary contributors to the team this year.

Not including Claude, who scored 20 points against Southern U, Steinbach is second on the team this season in points per game (14.5), second in field goal percentage (56.1%) and first in rebounds per game (12.8 per game).

Tucker is first on the team in 3-point percentage among players with more than five 3-point attempts this year (41.7%), second in rebounds per game (7.3) and fifth in points per game (9.7) — not including Claude.

Washington will have over a week before its next contest for the hobbles players to get healthier.

The Huskies will next be in action in the Acrisure Holiday Classic against Nevada at 1:30 p.m. PT on Nov. 27 in Palm Desert, Calif.
