Buffalo Bills Promote From Within To Hire Next Head Coach cover image

The Buffalo Bills elected to promote someone from their building as their next head coach who has a close relationship with Josh Allen

The Buffalo Bills have reportedly settled on their next head coach, and it’s someone who’s been with the organization since 2022. As reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bills are set to hire Joe Brady as their next head coach, and he’s reportedly agreed to terms that ESPN reports are for a five-year deal. Brady came on as Buffalo’s quarterback coach four seasons ago under former head coach Sean McDermott, and was promoted to interim coordinator in Nov. 2023, eventually taking over the full-time role in 2024. The Bills have ranked second in the league in points per game since that Week 11 promotion in 2023. He also helped coach quarterback Josh Allen to his first MVP award.

The team interviewed an array of candidates from across the league, including Brian Daboll, Anthony Lynn, Philip Rivers, and Anthony Weaver, but ultimately, the Bills elected to promote from within the building. This move could also keep a solid portion of staff in place together, allowing for some continuity as Buffalo enters a new era under Brady. However, he’ll have to find a new offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinator. It also seemingly has the backing of Allen, with Allen sitting in on interviews and being involved in the coaching search.

Here is the full story from Bills Roundtable writer Mike Straw on the next era in Buffalo under Brady.

Brady will now be tasked with trying to get Buffalo over the hump of continual postseason exits and try to make a push for a Super Bowl with the 30-year-old Allen in his prime. The Bills should be expected to continue their contending offense under Brady with an offensive-minded coach, and his impact is shown in those numbers from his time with the Bills. Brady led Buffalo to have the leading rush defense in the league in attempts, yards, and touchdowns.
