The Chicago Bears finished their sixth day of training camp on Tuesday at Halas Hall. Find out what happened to Caleb Williams and the first-team offense, and plenty more in these top takeaways.
The Chicago Bears are now six practices deep into training camp, with the last two featuring full pads. Tuesday's practice at Halas Hall incorporated live tackling and, naturally, the intensity went up another level.
Throughout camp, the Bears' first-team offense has played with precise timing, creating some big plays downfield. There were a few of those on Tuesday, but the main takeaway from practice No. 6 was the sloppiness from the starting unit.
Here's everything you need to know from the fully padded practice on Aug. 4.
Team Period 11 on 11s
After going through walk throughs and individual drills, the Bears went into a live period of 11 on 11s. The session started with a run by D'Andre Swift up the middle for a 5-yard gain. Then there was a muffed snap from Caleb Williams and center Garrett Bradbury, foreshadowing what was to come for the Bears' starting offense.
On the next snap, All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney was flagged for holding against interior defensive lineman Grady Jarrett. The veteran defensive tackle showed nice get-off and penetration on the rep. Despite the miscues, the first-team offense stayed on the field for another series of downs.
Jack Sanborn and Devin Bush blew up a run by Swift for a minimal gain to the right side, and the veteran running back had nowhere to go on a toss play to the left. On third down, Roschon Johnson ran the ball to the right for a first down. Defensive linemen Kentavius Street and Daniel Hardy blew up a run in the backfield.
The final session ended with Williams completing a pass to Luther Burden III for a short gain in the middle of the field.
The Bears' second 11 on 11 series was easily the unit's best of the day.
Williams connected with Burden for a decent gain on a crossing route to start things off. Swift ran the ball towards the left on the following play. Then Williams connected with Burden near the right sideline. The Bears' wide receiver stuck his left hand out and made a one-handed catch that wowed the crowd. Williams kept the momentum going with a perfectly thrown ball to Colston Loveland down the right sideline. The Bears' quarterback threw with touch, dropping the ball to his tight end between the safety and linebacker.
The Bears' third 11 on 11 series started with Williams falling to the ground after an under center snap. Couldn't tell if his feet were tangled with one of his offensive linemen, but the Bears started the drive going backwards. The defense created pressure, and Williams ran to his left and threw an incomplete pass intended for Loveland. Williams attempted to go back to his second-year tight end and threw a pass between the left hash and numbers, roughly 25-yards downfield. Loveland never turned back for the ball, but it looked underthrown as Tyrique Stevenson waited for the ball to fall into his arms for an interception.
After a run play, Williams completed a pass to Burden in the middle of the field.
The next series for the first-team offense started with a drop from Burden on a screen pass to the left. Williams' pass hit Burden in the hands, but he couldn't make the catch.
Swift did have a big run on the left side of the line, after Braxton Jones and Thuney created a lane. On the following rep, the Bears lined up 13 personnel, with Loveland, Cole Kmet and Sam Roush all to the left side of the formation. All three tight ends ran routes, and Williams attempted to hit Loveland, but the pass was well behind his intended target.
Johnson caught a screen pass to the right side of the formation, avoided a tackle and ran up field for a decent gain. Stevenson disrupted Rome Odunze's route downfield as Williams tried to connect with his receiver. The pass fell incomplete.
For the final session for the first-team offense, Bush almost intercepted Williams after the Bears' quarterback was flushed from the pocket and forced to run right. Bush made an acrobatic play, leaping to get his hands on the pass.
Back-to-back plays there was a miscue with the pre-snap procedure, forcing the offense to re-huddle. The second time was a false start.
Williams connected with Burden in the middle of the field for initially a short gain, but the receiver made the first defender miss to gain additional yardage. Loveland caught a pass on an out route. Good timing on the play. Then Williams completed a pass to Kalif Raymond down field near the left sideline. It was thrown in a tight window, but Austin Booker did create pressure off the left edge against Jones, and the play could have resulted in a sack.
Bush created pressure and forced an incomplete snap on the next rep. Williams completed a pass to Odunze near the left sideline on a drag route. Then with 3.2 seconds left in the practice, Williams threw into the end zone on the final play. He attempted to hit Burden with three defenders in the area, but Bush hit Burden and the ball fell incomplete. Burden stayed on the ground for a bit and eventually got up. Williams came over to check out his receiver, and Burden was quickly looked at on the sideline.
After practice, Burden told reporters he was "Ok."
Additional Notes
- For those wondering about the left tackle competition, Braxton Jones played with the first-team offense, while Jedrick Wills protected Tyson Bagent's blind side with the second unit, and Kiran Amegadjie started with the 3s.
- Kyle Monangai practiced for the second straight day and even participated for a few reps in 11 on 11s. The Bears' second-year running back is ramping up in the right direction.
- Cam Lewis played safety opposite of rookie Dillon Thieneman. Jaylon Jones played at the nickel spot for an injured Kyler Gordon. At the end of practice, Skyler Thomas also had some reps at safety.
- Bears sixth-round draft pick Jordan van den Berg slammed rookie backup offensive lineman Caden Barnett to the ground after a rep in 11 on 11s. The offense and defense came together where the two players were at before separating.
- The Bears ran a lot of 13 personnel in Tuesday's practice. Roush had a good amount of snaps with the first-team offense.
- Backup running back Salvon Ahmed continues to put together some good runs with the backups. He and Roschon Johnson are battling for that third running back spot.
- Tyson Bagent continues to connect with rookie receiver Zavion Thomas. During a rep in 11 on 11s, Thomas ran a vertical route near the right sideline and the rookie worked back to the football, fighting through the defender, to make the catch.
- Bagent also had a big completion to Jahdae Walker outside the left numbers. During special teams drills, Walker fought through a block and touched the bag that was behind the blocker. The Bears' receiver showed his excitement after the play, yelling after his win.
- Anthony Johnson Jr. intercepted Bagent's pass that was intender for a receiver down the right sideline. Josh Blackwell tipped the pass and Johnson completed the play.
