After delivering a dramatic Monday Night Football victory for Chicago, a special teams hero is looking for a new team after Washington cuts ties.
The Chicago Bears are entering their seventh consecutive season with Cairo Santos as their kicker this year.
He has been very reliable, which is hard to find in a kicker. Just last season, he broke the record for the most field goal makes of 50 yards or more (24) in franchise history, surpassing Robbie Gould (23).
Santos has been Chicago's kicker for a while, but he has missed time due to injury in the past.
Last season, just hours before the Week 6 game versus the Washington Commanders, Santos was listed as out with a quad injury. The Bears didn't have much time to look for a free agent replacement, so they elevated Jake Moody from the practice squad.
Like it was out of a movie, Moody ended up hitting the game-winning field goal to give the Bears a 25-24 win over the Commanders on Monday Night Football.
Unfortunately, Moody's story with the Bears didn't last much longer. He played in the following game against the New Orleans Saints, but then Santos returned to his starting kicker role.
Moody then found a new home with the Commanders, where he played in six games. He made 90.9% of his field goal attempts with the Commanders last season.
Now, he's on the move again.
NFL Analyst Jordan Schultz reported Monday that Washington was releasing Moody.
So far, Moody has played for three different NFL franchises. He started with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.
He was then let go by the 49ers, signed to the Bears' practice squad last year, and then joined the Commanders for the rest of the season.
Moody has definitely proven that he can be a reliable kicker in this league. There's no doubt that he won't have too hard a time finding a new home.
For the Bears, Santos had an awful miss in Saturday's preseason game with the Cleveland Browns. Santos attempted a 50-yard field goal, which is usually in his range, and missed wide left.
It's understandable why the Bears went with Santos when he got healthy, but he did have accuracy issues throughout last season. He made 83.3% of his field goal attempts in 2025, which is concerning considering he made 92.1% with the Bears in 2023.
It'll be interesting to see where Moody ends up. The people of Chicago are forever grateful to him for his heroics on Monday Night Football last year.
