Buffalo cuts ties with the former Bengals starter after a lackluster preseason, clearing the path for Damar Hamlin while the veteran safety tests a crowded open market.
The Buffalo Bills are releasing veteran safety Geno Stone.
Reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bills are planning to release the 27-year-old safety ahead of the NFL cutdown deadline on Sunday evening.
Schultz adds that it's possible that Stone return to the Bills' practice squad. However, the plan is to explore the open market first, and see what options are available.
Stone signed a one-year, $1.4 million contract with Bills during free agency. With only $187,500 of it guaranteed, the possibility of being released was always there. After disappointing performances in the preseason, along with being outplayed by long-time Bill Damar Hamlin, Stone's chances to make the 53-man roster seemed long.
Stone joined Buffalo after spending the last two seasons in Cincinnati. During his time with the Bengals, Stone started all 34 regular-season games, recording 185 tackles, two interceptions, 10 passes defended, and two sacks.
Prior to Cincinnati, the 2020 7th round pick spent the better part of four seasons in Baltimore. He also had a cup of coffee with the Houston Texans.
As of publication, the Bills have yet to announce Stone's release. His release, along with others, has to be submitted to the league by 6pm ET on Sunday.
The team has already announced the release of 13 players, including wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. Center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger has also been traded to the Indianapolis Colts. Other rumored moves as of this writing include cornerbacks Anthony Kendall and Toriano Pride Jr., as well as offensive lineman Da'Metrius Weatherspoon.
