DJ Moore is making a major impression at Bills training camp, with Khalil Shakir and Pete Carmichael highlighting what makes him so dangerous.
The Buffalo Bills knew they were getting a talented receiver when they acquired DJ Moore this offseason. What they may not have fully appreciated was just how much his versatility could change the way their offense operates.
Through the first part of training camp, Moore has already made an impression on his new teammates and coaches, with offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael highlighting the number of different ways Buffalo is using him.
"We're putting him in a lot of different spots, a lot of different positions, a lot of different routes," Carmichael said during his media availability on Monday.
That's an important part of what Moore brings to Buffalo. Rather than simply lining up on the outside and serving as another option for Josh Allen, the Bills are moving him around the field and trying to create different looks for opposing defenses.
Carmichael says Moore is currently bringing "an element of speed and some big plays" to the offense, but his versatility could ultimately be just as valuable.
Khalil Shakir has gotten an up-close look at that versatility throughout training camp, and the veteran receiver was emphatic when describing what he's seen from Moore.
"If you turn on the tape from our training camp, the dude is a freak," Shakir said. "Like, how he's able to move."
Shakir specifically pointed to Moore's releases, footwork and ability to manipulate defensive backs while running his routes.
"I've never really seen anything like it before," Shakir said. "So just that level of going into meetings and watching him work every single day elevates the room."
That impression has extended beyond what Moore is doing during individual routes. Shakir said Moore has looked "absolutely unreal" since arriving in Buffalo, particularly considering the questions that can come with a veteran receiver entering another season.
Instead, Shakir believes Moore looks like the younger version of himself.
"One of his goals that he mentioned was to look like young DJ, and he looks even better," Shakir said.
Josh Allen has also noticed the progress in his relationship with Moore. The quarterback previously said the two have developed a strong connection, allowing them to communicate about route concepts and make adjustments quickly.
That chemistry could become one of the biggest factors in Buffalo's offense this season.
The Bills already have several players capable of moving around the formation, including Shakir and Dalton Kincaid. Adding Moore to that mix gives Carmichael and head coach Joe Brady another way to create uncertainty for defenses.
As Carmichael explained, Buffalo can run some of the same core concepts while changing where its playmakers line up, creating a different picture for the defense.
