The Bills quarterback is ditching perfection for raw trust, letting it rip as he unlocks a new offensive rhythm with his elite, contested-catch playmaker in training camp.
The Buffalo Bills didn't bring in DJ Moore this offseason simply to add another talented receiver. They added him because they believe he can change what their offense looks like.
As training camp got underway on Wednesday, quarterback Josh Allen offered an early glimpse into how that process is unfolding, explaining that throwing to Moore requires a different mindset than he's used with other receivers.
"I feel myself trying to be perfect when I'm throwing him in some of the routes," Allen said. "Today, I walked up to him and was like, 'Hey, I'm just going to throw it. I'm going to pick a spot and let it go. I'm not trying to aim it anymore.'
"Once I said that, things kind of clicked for us."
Throughout his career, Moore has developed a reputation for making difficult catches and winning contested situations. Rather than waiting to see a receiver come open, Allen believes Moore has earned the confidence to throw the ball to a spot and let him make the play.
That chemistry is still developing, but Allen believes it's progressing every day.
"Each day that goes by, we're going to continue to get more comfortable with each other," Allen said, adding that it's less about trying to be perfect and more about just making the right plays.
"When you bring in a guy like him...you want to play well for him. You want to show him, like, hey, this is why you're here, to be this guy. But at the same time, go out there and play football on both ends. And you find a way to get open, and I'm going to give it a chance where you can catch the ball and make a play for us."
The addition of Moore gives Allen another proven playmaker alongside Khalil Sharkir, Keon Coleman, and Dalton Kincaid, creating one of what could be the deepest collections of pass catchers the Bills have surrounded their franchise quarterback with during his career.
While the regular season will ultimately determine how quickly the connection develops, Allen's comments suggest the foundation is already being built.
Instead of trying to make the perfect throw every time, he's learning to trust one of the NFL's more accomplished receivers to finish the play.
