The Tampa Bay Buccaneers pulled out all the stops to improve the team's defense this offseason.

After a disappointing 2025 campaign, which saw the defense fail to live up to Todd Bowles' reputation as a defensive genius (again) and be accused of not giving maximum effort on the field, the Bucs did everything they could to make sure neither happens again.

The front seven saw a massive overhaul. In free agency, Tampa signed high-profile players like Alex Anzalone, Al Quadin-Muhammad, and A'Shawn Robinson. In the draft, the Bucs used their first two picks on Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite Rueben Bain Jr. and Josiah Trotter, who the organization also has high expectations for.

The Bucs also signed Vita Vea to a lucrative contract extension, ensuring they retained the services of the star defensive tackle after failed negotiations caused the eight-year veteran to request a trade.

Tampa's defense should also receive major boosts from the returns of last year's fourth-round pick, outside linebacker David Walker, who missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL, and defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, who missed almost all of last year after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in Week 2.

Walker has looked dynamic in training camp, while Kancey looks to remind everyone why he was considered one of the league's best young DTs before his injury.

The defense has a new edginess and nastiness it has lacked recently, and Bowles claimed the difference between this year's team and last year's version is "night and day."

Tampa poured plenty of resources into the defense, and the improvements have been easy to notice. 

Not only by star left tackle Tristan Wirfs, who practices against those guys every day, but also by Gennaro Filice of NFL.com.

Filice made his predictions for the NFL's top-10 scoring defenses this year, and the new-look Bucs made the cut, coming in 10th.

Filice believes Bain will finally give the Bucs' defense the pass-rushing "monster" it has been missing for years, and thinks the former Miami Hurricane can provide the same level of impact that 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse had for the Los Angeles Rams.

"Todd Bowles’ defense has fallen off in recent seasons, with one of the biggest problems being the lack of a true edge monster. YaYa Diaby was a nice find in Round 3 of the 2023 draft, but no Buccaneer has posted double-digit sacks since Shaq Barrett back in 2021. This is why the Bucs are still thanking their lucky stars that Rueben Bain Jr. shockingly fell right into their lap in April’s draft. I’ve been driving the Bain train ever since, arm length be damned. Will the No. 15 overall pick post 10-plus sacks in Year 1? That’s a tall order for any first-year pro, but I think he can provide the kind of violent disruption that made Jared Verse the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year. More pressure up front will make life easier in the back end, which is key for Tampa’s young-but-enticing secondary."

Bain and Diaby should immediately become a feared pass-rushing duo for the Bucs. Diaby led the team with seven sacks last season. The significant rise in talent around him has Diaby excited as he enters a contract year.

It has been years since Bowles has had a defense that lived up to the high standard both he and the franchise have set. This season has the potential to end that drought.

Bain, who looks like a future superstar, the other newcomers, as well as the players returning from injury, should lead to a drastic improvement from Tampa's defense.

Can it crack the top 10 in scoring defense? Time will tell, but the talent is there to accomplish it.

The infusion of both young and veteran talent has Tampa's defense set up for success both now and in the future.
