Considering whether the Jim Harbaugh era has been a failure for the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Los Angeles Chargers have had a rough start as they are now 0-6 heading into a bye week, and as a result of that, head coach Jim Harbaugh has drawn heavy criticism as he has struggled to get his team on the same page so far this season.
When it comes to Harbaugh, he has had some success with the Chargers, but there have also been some points where Los Angeles has underachieved, which brings up one key question. Has the Jim Harbaugh era been a failure for the Chargers?
To start, there is no question that the Chargers have been a solid team since Harbaugh took over, with the exception of this year, as in 2024 and in 2025, Los Angeles posted an 11-6 record and made it to the Wild Card round of the playoffs with great performances in the regular season to get to that point.
While the Chargers did make it to the postseason, they were unable to get past the Wild Card round as they fell to the Houston Texans by a final score of 32-12 in 2024 and last season, Los Angeles lost to the New England Patriots in the Wild Card round by a score of 16-3.
In both of those games, the offense became very unproductive and was basically shut down, which, at a certain point, falls on Harbaugh when it becomes a consistent theme. However, that issue also has to do with the offensive coordinator, which is why Harbaugh decided to move on from Greg Roman and bring in Mike McDaniel.
With that said, the change at offensive coordinator does not appear to have paid off, as the Chargers have had their worst season on offense under Harbaugh to this point, which is not ideal, especially because the knock on Los Angeles was that they shrink when the postseason comes around, but now it appears they might not even be able to get there if things do not change quickly.
Focusing on the struggles with pressure, a lot of that has had to do with quarterback Justin Herbert and his issues with consistency, as well as the onslaught of injuries to the offensive line that have occurred. While those are not necessarily things that Harbaugh can control, it does fall on him as the head coach to find the solution.
All that to say, Harbaugh has been reliable for the most part when it comes to putting this team in a position to be competitive in the regular season, but when it comes to the playoffs and when the pressure is at its highest, it seems like Harbaugh and the Chargers have issues handling that pressure.
While Harbaugh has struggled to help the Chargers get over the top, he has had high level success in the past as he led the San Francisco 49ers to one Super Bowl appearance and three total conference championship appearances as well as three straight CFP appearances and a national championship when he coached the Michigan Wolverines.
Based on the success Harbaugh had with Michigan and with the 49ers, his time with the Chargers does look like a failure because once the regular season ends, he cannot elevate his team to the level they need to be at to truly compete for a championship and this year he is struggling to help Los Angeles to even pick up one win.
As 2026 continues to progress, it will be interesting to see what Chargers ownership thinks about Harbaugh and this roster, and if changes need to be made for Los Angeles to have future success, and whether or not that future would have Harbaugh as the head coach for the Chargers.
