Chiefs Will 'Monitor' Tyreek Hill Amid Reunion Rumors cover image

Kansas City watches Tyreek Hill's recovery closely. Will a reunion spark the offense again for the Chiefs and Mahomes?

In a very unsurprising move, the Miami Dolphins decided to release eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill after four seasons.

Hill is recovering from a season-ending knee injury that occured in the end of September, so his status for 2026 is in jeopardy due to the long recovery timeframe.

Could Hill return to Kansas City? That is where he began his career and formed quite a relationship with Patrick Mahomes.

Then, Hill wanted a new contract, and the Chiefs traded him to the Dolphins, as Miami agreed to give him that well-deserved contract.

As of now, Hill is a free agent, but all signs point to the Chiefs monitoring Hill to see how he recovers, according to Nate Taylor of ESPN

"While it's uncertain if Hill will be available for the season opener, the Chiefs are expected to monitor the progress of his recovery and training, according to league sources," Taylor wrote on Monday.

Taylor added that a reunion obviously makes sense for both sides. The Chiefs need a true WR1, and the Mahomes-Hill-Eric Bieniemy trio worked wonders in KC before Hill and Bieniemy left for other opportunities.

Prior to the weekend, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke about Hill being available, but Reid said he doesn't know if Tyreek is healthy right now, which is a big concern for any team trying to bring in the eight-time Pro Bowler.

Before suffering the injury, Hill had 21 catches for 265 yards and a score. In 2022 and 2023, his first two seasons in Miami, Hill had back-to-back 1,700-plus yard seasons with 119 receptions each year.

In 2024, Hill had 81 catches for 959 yards with six touchdowns, but the play of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa also went down, which made it more difficult for Hill to put up numbers on offense.

As for the Chiefs, the WR issues are evident. Since Hill left, the Chiefs have not had a wide receiver cross the 1,000-yard threshold.

Now, will Hill even play one game in 2026? That remains to be seen, and any team signing Hill likely does so with their eyes on 2027 and beyond. Hill turns 32 years old on March 1, so that is another concern.

Right now, the expectation is that the Chiefs will monitor the situation closely, and with free agency about to begin, it will be worth watching to see if Hill signs a contract or stays unsigned as he recovers from the injury.
